As you might have guessed (with the Part 2 in the name and so on) Part 2 of the Slow Burners series is here, I was going to take this mix apart and rearrange it, but I have decided just to upload it as is and start work on part 3 when I get a chance. Many thanks again for the wonderful miss Mambo C. for allowing me to use her Trini Groove track :) There is a bit of philosophy behind these mixes, in that I want to put music you would not often hear on mixes, blended together in a way that every time you listen to it you notice something different, and eventually get to know the music on a different level, that's one of the reasons I call the series the Slow Burner series

A week or so back there was a Facebook post asking who people preferred; KRS1 or Rakim. I immediately went with Rakim and Biz tended to lean towards KRS we knew that only 2 things could solve this argument either a message directly from Scott Baio endorsing one or the other or a mixtape, and as Biz has that court order thingy where is not allowed to communicate or be with in 200 meters of Scott Baio it ended up being the mix, and not just any mix a 97 minute marathon of classics, remixes and guest verses from 2 of the most influential MC's ever.

It wasnt the mix I had nearly finished, but myself and the homie Admin had to undertake a road trip this weekend to pick up a car full of records and I wanted to have a new mix to listen to, so this was the result. This is the third mix in the Jazzy Joints series, which in case you are not familiar are mixes that are inspired by jazz based hip hop and beats, so they contain tracks that are slightly left of center of what the average hip hop mix would. This edition also contains some tracks that I had sourced from some other soundcloud users that were unreleased, but the guys were nice enough to hook me up with a copy for the mix.

I havent done many updates lately sorry guys, but I have been getting busy in the lab! I have been steadily working on some new mixes, 1 is very close to finished (i will post a link as soonas it is done of course)the other is still a little way off, but I have finally been motivated to get them done! In the mean time I am going to hit you off with some mixes that I have been listening to a lot lately, the first is the Sunday Under My Sheets mix done by mr miette out of France and the second is an awesome soul mix done by Mr Jeff Fellows out of Sydney Australia! I have been getting really into both of these great mixes from Australian producer Katalyst lately. Both contain great songs that have been used in many of my favorite hip hop beats over the years, but it isnt one of those mixes where you have heard it all before, there are plenty of tracks on both that I have never heard on any mixes at all (and you know I listen to a lot of mixes!)

I recently came across these mixes on Mike's Soundcloud page and was an instant fan. Listening to them it is immediately obvious that they have been put together by some one with great taste and a genuine love of the music they play. So I downloaded all of them and passed out a couple to some of my friends (who usually hate everything), all of them came back to me with the who the hell is this guy and can i get more mixes kind of comments. I remember when this dropped, I had a friend who's dad was deep into jazz, and he actually played this to us one night and it blew me away. Then when I went to buy the record, it of course had the different (album) version on it. I spent a very long time looking for the 12" with the remix, until one day I went into a local record store that was at the time run by a very influential local hip hop guy and found this in the $2 bin, it turned out because it was a plain sleeve promo with uptempo remix he thought it was a house version and didn't bother listening to it. It was only 5 or 6 years ago i actually realized that it wasn't the mighty Dj Premier that produced this but a man by the name of John Waddell, a UK producer who had worked with the likes of CJ Mackintosh in Nasty Rox Inc

Released in 1983 on an Aerobics record, but I actually don't know a lot about Shiva, all I can tell you is that you should be able to find this record in your local op shop for around a dollar, I just have always loved the groove for this song, not too keen on the corny sax part in the middle, but its over with pretty quickly. If any one can point me in the right direction for further information on the artist that would be great, ps I am pretty sure they are not the UK house group from the 90's.

I am sure for those of you that read this blog that you are now aware that the legendary Gil Scott-Heron recently passed. On Saturday evening when I first read the news I was a little surprised at just how deeply it saddened me. I sat at my desk in my studio thinking for a while, listening to some of his records in the background, and it dawned on me, this was not just the passing of another musical icon (which sadly seems to be almost a weekly occurrence), Gil Scott-Heron was the kind of artist that I truly look up to. He delivered his art on his own terms, never compromising, always at the cutting edge and left a mark on music that has already been incredibly influential in changing the way music is made and listened to across many genres. Add to that the consistency in his output had always been unquestionably high, even in his later releases (which I am sure I don’t have to mention cannot always be said in regards to many other artist that I also have been heavily influenced by over the years), and you get some sense that Gil Scott-Heron was someone very special.

For some reason the site that was hosting the files for me decided (even though I objected) to change my user name, from that point on I had nothing but trouble with the site (links not working etc,etc), so I have decided that the new home for all of the mixes I have done (and any upcoming) will be with the great guys at mixcrate.com. Well, it turns out I was wrong I havent been able to do much more on the music tip lately, with the exception of a soul mix that is available via password only. But we did manage to get together the other night and record a mix of some of my personal favorite The Roots tracks, every single album (except one, and who ever can tell me which album that is gets special bonus access to said soul mix) is represented on this mix, from the 1993 debut of Organix all the way through to this year's How I Got Over, it also contains some rarer remixes and so on to keep every one happy. As usual it was all recorded live and strictly using vinyl.

For the more frequent visitors you would probably have noticed that it seems to have slowed down a little around here lately, I have been getting ready for the arrival of my second child, very exciting times! There are a couple of produced mixtapes in the works at the moment, but they will be getting done when I have time, which might be a little while, so I have decided to give people a look into the instrumental project I am working on at the moment, all the beats are heavily jazz based and are only rough versions at this point in time, I am hoping to have the release finished by around September, so stay tuned.

Its not very often i post anything other than mixtapes on here, but over the past few months myself and good friend biz (aka toobiz aka the pirate of richmond aka worst guy ever etc) have been putting in some time in the studio making some music that we are truly prepared to stand behind. Both of us have been very active in the local music scene over the past 8-10 years, both of us are part of 7 piece Jazz/Funk?hip-Hop band , both of us were involved in Mindfield (Crackhouse) and both of us have also had other side projects to keep us busy over the last few years, but we also both seemed to want to try and push our music into some different directions, and over time we have realized that direction was very similar, so we have formed Decades, below is the first releases we have to offer, the first is a quick sneak peak at the title track from the album and the second is a free track (available in wav and mp3 format) entitled Enjoy the Ride, we have chosen these 2 tracks to start with as they offer what we feel is a good insight into some of the range we feel we can offer. please feel free to leave any feedback, be it positive or negative

So the other night we decided that we needed to make a Japanese Hip Hop mixtape, so we burnt down a few, put a tape in the deck and went for it. All recorded live in doobz's kitchen (with the speakers in the lounge for that added rawness), so there are a few little hiccups in the mixing, but the tape still bangs! The other side should be uploaded soon (we had a small issue with one needle only coming through on one side so I need to try and fix that before i post it)

Live on Tape

Well updates have been few and far between lately, but this one should keep you going for a while, all recorded onto analogue tapes (so tape 1 and 2 will fit perfectly onto a 90 minute tape and tape 3 and 4 will fit perfectly onto a 100 minute tape), this was all recorded live on Friday night, so the music does change up with what was happening, but dont let that put you off, i have been bumping these in my car and it is easily some of the best car mixtapes I have listened to! Totaling just over 3 hours there is every thing from Japanese Hip Hop (Grooveman Spot, Mitsu and so on), Jazz (Art Blakey, Horace Silver etc) Soul (Ruth Brown, The Sylvers, Marvin Gaye, Dorris Duke etc) Afro (Ice Cream, Fela Kuti, BLO, and more) , there is alos some good old fshioned boombap hip hop, (even the rare Ahmad, Ras Kass & Saafir Come Widdit remix and the Afu Ra Through these veins and heaps more), its just a shame we managed to miss the first hour due to a tape pause issue :)

Well as some of you may know, on September 19 2009 one of the worlds best passed. Anthony "Roc Raida" Williams was truly some one very special. The dj world is fairly cut throat especially the battle circuit, but Roc Raida was that guy that every one only ever had good things to say about, his stage charisma was exceptional, his skills were truly inspiring and most importantly he was incredibly musical. The word icon is often miss used to describe dj's, but I would bet my life that there isnt one credible dj out there that would not tell you Roc Raida should not be in that category. So to celebrate the life of some one that never failed to inspire me, i bring you these treats.

The one thing I didnt have on this blog was a straight hip hop mix, this mix well help cover that. I have been hassling Admin for quite a while to get me a mixtape, but he is like big foot, not only because of the facial hair, but because sightings of him are rare and he hardly ever emerges from his cave. All that aside, the guy knows his hip hop, as this mix will definitely point out, running at 2 and a quater hours its a non stop mix of pure quality underground hip hop, but on the chill out tip. artist include atmosphere, dj shadow, pharcyde, blackalicious and many many more.

also if you havent heard AD's beats be sure to check out Dialects album, or the admin and vella ep, or the maintain releases, or anything else he has done

This is a version of the Marvin Gaye classic by Brazilian super group Azymuth (brazilian music aficionado's and people who have seen brazilintime know whats up) , I play the 12" of this out quite a bit, and if i get enough responses to get me off my lazy ass to do a high quality rip from the vinyl it shall be done!

This is now around 12 or so months old and i just realized i had not posted it on here and a few people on here might be into it.
My friend needed to get a short clip together for his portfolio and asked if I could help him by making a beat for it, what you see below is what it evolved into, the looped footage was my idea, because i thought it fitted in with the whole loop based production i used for the project, the beat took around 2-3 hours to make from start to finish and the editing was all done in around 3-4 hours, so we are very happy with the footage we got from 6-8 hours work
