Slow Burners Volume 2

As you might have guessed (with the Part 2 in the name and so on) Part 2 of the Slow Burners series is here, I was going to take this mix apart and rearrange it, but I have decided just to upload it as is and start work on part 3 when I get a chance. Many thanks again for the wonderful miss Mambo C. for allowing me to use her Trini Groove track :) There is a bit of philosophy behind these mixes, in that I want to put music you would not often hear on mixes, blended together in a way that every time you listen to it you notice something different, and eventually get to know the music on a different level, that's one of the reasons I call the series the Slow Burner series

KRS1 v's Rakim The Mix

A week or so back there was a Facebook post asking who people preferred; KRS1 or Rakim. I immediately went with Rakim and Biz tended to lean towards KRS we knew that only 2 things could solve this argument either a message directly from Scott Baio endorsing one or the other or a mixtape, and as Biz has that court order thingy where is not allowed to communicate or be with in 200 meters of Scott Baio it ended up being the mix, and not just any mix a 97 minute marathon of classics, remixes and guest verses from 2 of the most influential MC's ever.

Yes I finally did a new mix

It wasnt the mix I had nearly finished, but myself and the homie Admin had to undertake a road trip this weekend to pick up a car full of records and I wanted to have a new mix to listen to, so this was the result. This is the third mix in the Jazzy Joints series, which in case you are not familiar are mixes that are inspired by jazz based hip hop and beats, so they contain tracks that are slightly left of center of what the average hip hop mix would. This edition also contains some tracks that I had sourced from some other soundcloud users that were unreleased, but the guys were nice enough to hook me up with a copy for the mix.

Sunday's Rule

I havent done many updates lately sorry guys, but I have been getting busy in the lab! I have been steadily working on some new mixes, 1 is very close to finished (i will post a link as soonas it is done of course)the other is still a little way off, but I have finally been motivated to get them done! In the mean time I am going to hit you off with some mixes that I have been listening to a lot lately, the first is the Sunday Under My Sheets mix done by mr miette out of France and the second is an awesome soul mix done by Mr Jeff Fellows out of Sydney Australia! Both of these guys have other great mixes on their pages so be sure to check them out!

Rotary Connection Sunshine of Your Love dL edit by Decades
and one last thing, I just came across this earlier today, it is a video of Blackstar doing a live performance of one of their new tracks, they give a Madlib shout out which as much as love Madlib is a little worrying as I think he is too hot/cold to do an entire album, so lets hope that they stick to the formular of the first album and have a few different producers that all seem to gel together nicely (i especially hope to hear some j.rawls and hi-tek)

RIP Grand Master Roc Raida

Yesterday marked 2 years since Roc Raida died as a result of injuries he received via a Krav Maga accident. I thought I would share one of my favorite memories of his via his X-Men Style Beats from the Bomb Dj's compilation.

Katalyst makes fresh mixtapes!

I have been getting really into both of these great mixes from Australian producer Katalyst lately. Both contain great songs that have been used in many of my favorite hip hop beats over the years, but it isnt one of those mixes where you have heard it all before, there are plenty of tracks on both that I have never heard on any mixes at all (and you know I listen to a lot of mixes!)

Mike O'Mara Hip Hop Soul Mixes

I recently came across these mixes on Mike's Soundcloud page and was an instant fan. Listening to them it is immediately obvious that they have been put together by some one with great taste and a genuine love of the music they play. So I downloaded all of them and passed out a couple to some of my friends (who usually hate everything), all of them came back to me with the who the hell is this guy and can i get more mixes kind of comments. So I went back to make sure I got all of the mixes in the series and the links so I could post them on here, but they had been removed due to time restrictions. So I sent Mike a message and he kindly offered to upload them on Mixcloud so people can continue to enjoy them!

Mo' Edits

Gang Starr and John Waddell Love Sick uptempo remix dL edit (limited downloads available) by Decades
I remember when this dropped, I had a friend who's dad was deep into jazz, and he actually played this to us one night and it blew me away. Then when I went to buy the record, it of course had the different (album) version on it. I spent a very long time looking for the 12" with the remix, until one day I went into a local record store that was at the time run by a very influential local hip hop guy and found this in the $2 bin, it turned out because it was a plain sleeve promo with uptempo remix he thought it was a house version and didn't bother listening to it. It was only 5 or 6 years ago i actually realized that it wasn't the mighty Dj Premier that produced this but a man by the name of John Waddell, a UK producer who had worked with the likes of CJ Mackintosh in Nasty Rox Inc

Shiva Never Gonna Give You Up dL edit by Decades
Released in 1983 on an Aerobics record, but I actually don't know a lot about Shiva, all I can tell you is that you should be able to find this record in your local op shop for around a dollar, I just have always loved the groove for this song, not too keen on the corny sax part in the middle, but its over with pretty quickly. If any one can point me in the right direction for further information on the artist that would be great, ps I am pretty sure they are not the UK house group from the 90's.

Dj Format's European Vacation Mix

It is very uncommon for me to post other dj's mixes on this blog, but this mix is an all time favorite of mine. I can highly recommend all of his mixes and make sure you check out his incredible production skills on any one of his many albums. Apologies for the very lackluster description but it was a very late night last night!

Mayer Hawthorne - No Strings (Roller Boogie Remix by DJ Jazzy Jeff)

I am not going to pretend that I am a long time fan of Mayer Hawthorne, it isn’t that I have anything against him in any way what so ever, in fact I have heard some releases that I have quite liked, it’s just he has never jumped out at me. I am on the other hand a huge fan of Jazzy Jeff which is exactly why I am taking this unusual step of posting someone else's material on my own page. To me Jazzy Jeff is one of the few dj's that i truly believe could never be over hyped (unlike a few of the other dudes that don’t seem to mind putting their own name in the hat), he has his own style/flavor, timeless skills and impeccable taste!

Gil Scott-Heron

Photobucket

I am sure for those of you that read this blog that you are now aware that the legendary Gil Scott-Heron recently passed. On Saturday evening when I first read the news I was a little surprised at just how deeply it saddened me. I sat at my desk in my studio thinking for a while, listening to some of his records in the background, and it dawned on me, this was not just the passing of another musical icon (which sadly seems to be almost a weekly occurrence), Gil Scott-Heron was the kind of artist that I truly look up to. He delivered his art on his own terms, never compromising, always at the cutting edge and left a mark on music that has already been incredibly influential in changing the way music is made and listened to across many genres. Add to that the consistency in his output had always been unquestionably high, even in his later releases (which I am sure I don’t have to mention cannot always be said in regards to many other artist that I also have been heavily influenced by over the years), and you get some sense that Gil Scott-Heron was someone very special.

Gil Scott-Heron Inner City Blues extended edit by Decades

I wanted to highlight a track of GSH's that wasn't sullen or sad. To demonstrate just how talented this man was, I have chosen to share a track of his that was originally recorded by the great Marvin Gaye. Not only does Gil do this song justice, he makes it his own, which many other artist have tried, and very few have succeeded. Rest In Power Gil Scott-Heron (April 1, 1949 – May 27, 2011)

Rare Groove Edits

I have recently been unable to spend much time in the studio due to an illness that I am thankfully nearly recovered from, so updates have been few and far between. So I will hit you all off with a few edits the Milton Wright edit has a download link to high quality mp3, and some beats that I have been either working on or listening too. Bonus beats as the Cotton Candy edit is from dj codes time and place mix that I helped him with a couple of years back, I will also post the link to the mix to allow you to get familiar.

Mixes

Some of you that have come to the site may have noticed that all the old links to mixes have suddenly dissapeared. For some reason the site that was hosting the files for me decided (even though I objected) to change my user name, from that point on I had nothing but trouble with the site (links not working etc, etc), so I have decided that the new home for all of the mixes I have done (and any upcoming) will be with the great guys at mixcrate.com. All mixes are free to download still, but you need to register to download, but you can as a casual user listen to as many mixes as you like. But i assure you it is well worth it, there are free mixes from some of the best DJ's in the world right now including ShortKut, D-Styles, Apollo, Vin Roc and so on.
This is the link to my profile, come past and have a look!

Can You Dig It?

Another long week of work means another week with out any mixes getting done, fortunately I had this mix from fellow Decades member 2Biz aka dj originalbogandrunkenmasterpiratelaughter. I have been meaning to share this one for a while, it starts and finishes with tracks from the Warriors and has tracks from John Robinson and J Rawls, Jazz Liberatorz, Damian Marley, The Roots and heaps more ( I particularly like the John Legend version of Our Generation which is a cover of Ernie Hines Our Generation a powerful and funky soul track famously used for Pete Rock and C.L Smooth's Straighten It Out. This version even features C.L on the Mic just to add that special touch!)

eleventh hour mix

Doobz and Biz go have done it again with this very cool mix of soul, hip hop, reggae and all sorts of other weird and wonderful music. Perfect listening for those summer nights t the beach!

Thursday, January 20, 2011

I had been meaning to do a Large Pro mix for a long time and then Doobz decided that maybe we should do a Extra-P v's Buckwild mix, so we all went off and pulled out some of our favourite tracks from both of these heavy weights and pressed record. All recorded live off of vinyl and as usual freestyled, so there is a few little technical issues (technical meaning i was too busy talking and didnt realize the track was about to end). So here it is in all of its flawed glory!
Tracks from DITC, Common, Sadat X, Channel Live, Funkdoobiest, Common, Beastie Boys, Artifacts, Diamond D, Brand Nubian, A.T.C.Q, Guru and more!

Live Another Day, Learn Another Lesson

Well I have been talking about it for quite a while but it is actually getting closer, we have almost (finally!) finished mixing and now just need to take the record to mastering to clean it up a little. So in honor of getting this far I have put together a mini mix of some of the tracks from the LP. Feel free to leave constructive criticism. I also have another awesome mix to post in the coming days so stay tuned!
